Recently, I have been quite interested in making things, and there are two area that interest me the most: toiletries and candles. Naturally, I am looking around the internet to find some nice and easy recipes to try and I came across a recipe by Victoria, the Modern Homestead Mama.
Ingredients
50g shea butter
50g cocoa butter
50g coconut oil
50g carrier oil (I use sweet almond oil)
10 drops of your favourite essential oil (optional)
Method
Using the double boiler method, melt all ingredients apart from the essential oil over medium heat.
Remove the mixture from the heat and allow it to cool down until the centre is still fairly liquid, while the edges are already hardened. This takes about an hour in the fridge. Although it depends on the fridge and how cold the setting it.
At this stage it is safe to add your essential oils.
Now for the fun part. Using a standard hand mixer begin to whip your mixture. This will take time, so be patient. For a long while it looks like nothing happens and then boom! It take at least ten minutes so keep whipping!
Once you have the desired texture, fill the body butter into jars. They keep in the fridge for up to 9 months.
A little side note about the ingredients:
If you don't like cocoa butter or can't get hold of it then you leave it out and substitute the 50g with additional shea butter.
